Expeditions: Conquistador is a project which, from the first moment I became aware of it, intrigued me. During their crowd-funding[*] campaign, the available information about the game was sparse, and this trend continued well beyond the campaign’s very modest success. After pushing back the release deadline, and revealing to their expectant community of would-be fans that they had signed with a publisher [later revealed only to be their distributon] and implemented certain features that were not part of their campaign, the project seemed from the outside to be drifting. Critically, the intervention of what was first thought to be a publisher in order to facilitate easy access to Steam galled a number of backers and potential buyers at the RPG Codex. These missteps did not, of course, reflect on the potential quality on the game but on whether or not we could ‘trust’ the team, which is problematic in the era of crowd-funding when it seems that the cultivation of brand loyalty (whether that brand is a cohesive design team or a well-worn franchise generating nostalgia) is key. One might wonder at this point why I would raise these issues in the review—an opening salvo against a failed product, perhaps? On the contrary, this reviewer has chosen to highlight the issues which led to the release of Expeditions: Conquistador (henceforth E:C) in order to demonstrate that in spite of the meagre crowd-funding windfall (not a single stretch goal was met), in spite of the team’s stumbles (which I believe can be attributed to the conceits of youth), and most of all in spite of a decade of games which have been not only hostile to turn-based, narrative-driven roleplaying systems, E:C is a resounding success.
