علم ساختاری است برای تولید و ساماندهی دانش دربارهٔ جهان طبیعی در قالب توضیحها و پیشبینیهای آزمایششدنی.یک معنای قدیمی تر و نزدیک که امروزه هنوز هم به کار میرود متعلق به ارسطو است و دانش علمی را مجموعهای از آگاهی های قابل اتکا می داند که از لحاظ منطقی و عقلانی قابل توضیح باشند.
از عصر کلاسیک علوم به عنوان یک نوع دانش با فلسفه ارتباط نزدیکی داشتند. در اوایل عصر مدرن دو کلمه علم و فلسفه در زبان انگلیسی به جای هم به کار برده میشدند. در قرن ۱۷ میلادی فلسفه طبیعی (که امروز علوم طبیعی نامیده میشود) به تدریج از فلسفه جدا شد. با این حال علم همچنان کاربردی وسیع برای توضیح آگاهیهای مطمئن در مورد یک موضوع داشت. به همین ترتیب هم امروزه در عصر مدرن همچنان برای موضوعاتی همچون علم کتابداری و یا علوم سیاسی به کار میرود.
