اصطلاح Astrophotography به معنای ثبت تصاویر اجرام آسمانی از طریق تلسکوپ، از حدود سالهای ۱۹۰۰ میلادی رواج یافت. فیلم‌های با حساسیت کم آن روزگار نیاز به نوردهی های طولانی داشتند و برای ثابت نگاه‌داشتن اجرام در عکس، نیاز به خنثی نمودن حرکت زمین بود. این نیاز امروزه نیز در بسیاری از عکاسی‌های نجومی با نوردهی طولانی وجود دارد. عکس‌های نجومی با تعریف فوق زیبایی‌های بی‌شماری دارند اما این عکس‌ها فاقد نشانه‌های بصری هستند که توسط آن‌ها بتوان عظمت یا فاصله آن‌ها را درک کرد. مساله فوق همراه با پیشرفت‌هایی که در تجهیزات عکاسی این روزگار حاصل شده است، باعث علاقه و اقبال فزاینده عکاسان به نوع خاصی از عکاسی شبانه به نام Landscape Astrophotography شده است که در این عکس‌ها، هم چشم‌اندازهای زمینی دیده می‌شوند و هم اجرام سماوی، درست همانگونه که با چشم در تماشای شبانه می‌توان دید. در Landscape Astrophotography تصاویری از راه شیری، کهکشان آندرومدا یا نورهای منطقه البروج با مناظر زمینی مانند درختها، سنگها یا ساختمانهای قدیمی ترکیب می‌شود. در این نوع عکاسی هر چند تجهیزات نقش مهمی دارند اما مهارت عکاس برای پیدا کردن محل مناسب برای عکاسی، بسیار حیاتی خواهد بود. بسیاری از مناظری که در نور روز جالب به نظر می رسند، در عکاسی شبانه هیچ جذابیتی نخواهند داشت و بالعکس، برخی مناظر معمولی روز، در عکاسی شبانه و در ترکیب با آسمان، بسیار زیبا خواهند بود. یک تک درخت یا حتی یک تخته سنگ معمولی ممکن است در این نوع عکاسی، نقش مهمی ایفا کند.در دوره آموزشی Skillshare Nightscapes: Landscape Astrophotography با عکاسی آستروفوتوگرافی آشنا می شوید.
